The Importance of Musical Theatre: Storytelling, Art, Expression, Community, EducationThe Importance of Musical Theatre: Storytelling, Art, Expression, Community, Education

Why Musical Theatre is Important

Musicals depend on song to advance the story, introduce and define characters, emphasize emotional responses and even provide comic relief. Without song, musicals wouldn’t exist.

It’s not unusual for a musical to comment on social issues. From The Beggar’s Opera to Avenue Q, musicals have addressed racism, sexism, poverty and other major societal concerns.

1. They are a form of storytelling

Musicals use music and dancing to convey emotions that words alone cannot. This allows the audience to connect with a character and understand their intentions more fully.

This is especially true for dance and movement, which have recently become a larger part of many theatre pieces. This reflects a trend towards multidisciplinary artists who refuse to be boxed into one art form.

It also reflects the increased awareness of the importance of movement in storytelling. For example, Jesse Green’s “Dance, if You Can” and Skeleton Crew’s “Teenage Dick” both highlight the way dance can be used to deepen or further explore a plot point or creatively tell a story. In addition, the rhythm of music informs dancing and the tempo of songs determines how fast or slow a character should move.

2. They are a form of art

Musicals have a special place as a form of art because they combine music, dance and acting into one cohesive show. It takes a lot of skill and imagination to create a musical, and it can be quite an emotional experience for the audience.

Like other types of theatre, musicals can comment on important social issues. For example, West Side Story addressed racial tolerance and was a significant milestone for musicals. Other examples include the Broadway shows Ragtime and Parade, which explored historical American racism and anti-Semitism respectively.

Creating a musical requires a composer to create the music and a librettist to write the words for the songs. There are also many other people who work on the production, including stage crew and performers. Some actors and musicians may be with a show for years before it hits the big time.

3. They are a form of expression

Musical theatre is a form of expression that allows actors to convey emotions and intentions through song when spoken dialogue alone may not be enough. This is why it is important for actors to understand the power of songs and how they can add depth to their performances.

Using song to convey a character’s feelings helps audiences connect with them and understand their motivations. This is why musicals often incorporate songs that explain the circumstances or context of a scene, or preview key themes.

Musicals also encourage actors to creatively encapsulate a play’s mood through their dialogue. This teaches them how to manage their own emotions and see things from their characters’ perspectives. This translates into life skills, like empathy and tolerance. Students who are involved with musical theatre often develop close friendships with their fellow cast and crew members.

4. They are a form of community

Musicals are a form of theater that combine songs, spoken dialogue and dance. They can be based on novels (Wicked and Man of La Mancha), plays (Oliver! and Carousel), classic legends or historical events. Musical theatre traces its roots to vaudeville, British music hall and melodrama.

It takes a team of professionals to produce a musical: the scriptwriters, the composer, a musical director and a choreographer. The choreographer creates and interprets the show’s dance elements.

Song and music convey emotion and storyline much faster than spoken dialogue can. This means that the composers of a musical must be able to condense the drama of a play into fewer words. They also have to make sure that there is continuity between the musical numbers and the plot of the play.

5. They are a form of education

Musical theatre is a form of education because it teaches children to work as part of a team. It also teaches them to speak clearly and with confidence. In addition, they learn to create their own characters. In doing so, they can craft a gift they may carry with them for years to come.

Musicals require a composer who creates the music, and a librettist who writes any non-singing dialogue (the book). They usually have a director, musical director and, in many cases, a theatrical choreographer. Performers may specialize in acting, singing and dancing or be a “triple threat” who can do all three.

Musicals can educate students about social issues, like racial tolerance or homosexuality. For instance, West Side Story left a message of racial tolerance, and shows such as Parade and Ragtime taught about historical American racism.

Rock Musicals Take the StageRock Musicals Take the Stage

Musicals That Start With R

After the success of Hair, musicals started to appear that were based on popular music. This included the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Another hit was Guys and Dolls by composer/lyricist Frank Loesser. And then came Mamma Mia, which was based on the music of ABBA.

Run To The Hills by Iron Maiden

The Iron Maiden song Run To the Hills is about the conflict between European settlers and Native American tribes. It was written by the band’s bassist, Steve Harris. The song explores the conflict from the perspectives of both sides.

The song is famous for its galloping triplets bassline, which mimics the sound of horses running. It also features a high-energy guitar riffs. It was released as a single in February 1982 and is one of the band’s most popular songs.

A live version of the song, from the album Live After Death, was released in 1985. Both the original single and the live release charted on the UK Singles Chart. A reissue of the single was released in 2002, with all income from the commercial release being donated to former drummer Clive Burr’s MS Trust Fund. This single also includes a bonus track of “Flash of the Blade,” which is another sword-fighting song by the band.

Reelin’ In The Years by Steely Dan

After scuffling as songwriters and musicians-for-hire, Becker and Fagen formed Steely Dan, a group that would be defined by their ability to fuse jazz chords and melodies with traditional rock. Reelin’ In The Years encapsulates the duo’s knack for smart lyrics and cerebral composition, coupled with consummate popular songwriting.

With its sardonic and perverse lyrical content, the song is an anthem for anyone shook by heartbreak. The groovy tune has become a hallmark of the band’s work and has been embraced by multiple generations of artists.

While some felt that Reelin’ In The Years was a bit of a letdown following Aja, it remains one of the best songs from the duo’s illustrious career. The track opens with a guitar solo by Elliot Randall, who inverts expectations and deviates from the typical American rock axeman’s swagger by frontloading his part with a gawky energy that contrasts with Becker’s smooth voice and Fagen’s perfect chorus line.

Rounds by The Prisoner of Zenda

When Anthony Hope Hawkins, a middle-aged barrister with an Oxford degree in Classics and a career in the law, penned The Prisoner of Zenda in 1894, he created an immortal piece of fiction. Its setting, the fictional pocket kingdom of Ruritania, cast a long shadow with countless “Ruritanian” adventure stories, costume dramas, operettas and stage musicals.

This 1952 Technicolor remake of a 1937 black-and-white film adaptation of the novel and play by Anthony Hope Hawkins, is arguably one of the best of many, with a screenplay by Wells Root and Alfred Newman’s original music score. It brings the cardboard kingdom to life with elegance, flair and excitement in a story that is at once an adventure tale and a wryly executed satire on late nineteenth-century European politics. While jaded readers today might find its plot simplicity somewhat staid, those who remember the heyday of the golden age of Hollywood will revel in this classic. It features plenty of thrilling duels and exciting chases.

Roundabout Theatre Company

The Roundabout Theatre Company is one of America’s leading not-for-profit cultural institutions, committed to producing the highest quality theater with the finest artists and sharing stories that endure. Through its five stages on and off Broadway, Roundabout’s work reaches millions of theatergoers, students, teachers, and artists each year.

This new Broadway revival of the classic backstage musical comedy is occasionally too darn hot but mostly just a little bit meh. The high points include Warren Carlyle’s dazzling choreography (especially the act two opener “Too Darn Hot”); Kelli O’Hara’s perfectly pitched singing voice; and a well-appointed production that evokes the ebullient atmosphere of old Broadway.

Founded in 1965, the Roundabout Theatre Company produces a mix of revivals and new works at its five stages on and off Broadway, earning nine Best Revival Tony Awards and debuting such notable new playwrights as Stephen Karam, Lindsey Ferrentino, Steven Levenson, Joshua Harmon, and Mansa Rafferty. Roundabout also offers a range of education programs to reach thousands of students and teachers each year.

Where to See Musical Shows in San Francisco

San Francisco has a thriving theater scene with dozens of options. The city is also known for hosting productions before they go to Broadway. Many famous Broadway shows got their start in the Bay Area, including American Idiot and Fences.

A sassy girl takes on the world in this joyous musical. Featuring larger-than-life staging and costumes, this show is sure to delight children of all ages.

The Curran Theatre

The Curran Theatre is a beautiful theater located in San Francisco. It’s easily accessible by public transit and is a great place to see a musical show. There are a lot of places to grab a bite to eat near the theater.

Despite the fact that Broadway national tours seldom run here, the theater has hosted several long runs of hit shows including Les Miserables and Jersey Boys. The theatre is operated by the Nederlander Organization, which also operates the Orpheum and the Golden Gate Theatre.

Its vision of America is hilariously warped, full of gun-toting desperados and meth bars where everyone is blond. The cast of actors, led by a fine Albus Potter, make the most of the material, including one especially priceless scene in a fancy-dress McDonald’s with roller-skating waiters.

The Orpheum Theatre

The Orpheum Theatre in San Francisco is one of the city’s iconic theaters. Originally opened in 1926, the Orpheum was designed by West Coast theater architect Benjamin Marcus Priteca as a showcase for vaudeville impresario Alexander Pantages. The theater features a dramatic facade patterned after a 12th-century French cathedral.

It is now the flagship theater for Shorenstein Hays Nederlander (SHN). It hosts world premieres, pre-Broadway engagements and limited West Coast runs of Broadway shows.

The current production of “Les Miserable” is a must-see. The show is a musical masterpiece that combines soaring music, epic poetry and stunning scenery to capture the heart of Victor Hugo’s novel. Its sublime and sultry choreography by Tony-winner Sonya Tayeh throbs with passion, power and consummate artistry. Actors such as Libby Lloyd, Harper Miles and Nicci Claspell evoke a sense of wonder and the audience can’t help but be spellbound by their performances.

The San Francisco Playhouse

Founded in 2003, the San Francisco Playhouse is a thriving theater company. It is located on the second story of the Kensington Park Hotel and offers a variety of stage productions to inspire artistic interest among the city’s youth. The company produces plays and musicals that receive critical acclaim.

SF Playhouse’s vibrant production of A Chorus Line makes the perfect introduction to this iconic musical, and director Bill English captures its spirit and energy with skill. The cast is particularly strong, with a snarky and wounded Bobby (Nicholas Yenson), jaded Sheila (Alison Ewing), insecure Maggie (Danielle Cheiken) and soaring vocalist Chachi Delgado all shining. Melissa Wolfklain is hilarious regaling the benefits of plastic surgery as Val, and James Kirkwood and Nicholas Dante’s book holds up beautifully.

Oakland Theater Project

Founded in 2012, the Oakland theater company has built a reputation for producing provocative plays at unconventional venues like churches, parking lots, and even garages. The company’s mission is to bring the stories of ordinary people to a wider audience, and it has done exactly that with its current production, Binding Ties.

In this play, two low-wage workers squabble and muse about their lives. Their existential musings are reminiscent of Beckett’s plays, and this is a well-written, thought-provoking piece. The acting is superb and Carlos Aceves’ haphazard spread of draperies on an oddly-shaped stage makes the show work well.

Next up is the Bay Area premiere of Martyna Majok’s Cost of Living, directed by Emilie Whelan (A Streetcar Named Desire). And in fall, OTP will present the West Coast premiere of Taylor Mac’s Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus.

TheatreWorks Silicon Valley

TheatreWorks Silicon Valley, the nation’s leading professional non-profit theatre company in Palo Alto, is seeking a director of development to help them grow their audience base and secure new sources of revenue. The job is ideal for a candidate with experience in fundraising, strategic planning, community/civic engagement, board and staff development, and social responsibility campaigns.

The theater has been struggling since the pandemic shutdown, and subscription and single ticket sales have declined significantly. Earlier this month, the company warned that it could shut down in November without a $3 million lifeline from the community.

Giovanna Sardelli, the recently named artistic director of TheatreWorks, said the company is on the edge of collapse because it has run out of money. It is desperately trying to raise the money.

Five New Musical Shows

A doomed Parisian romance explodes in a spectacular new musical sung to snippets of more than 70 pop songs. Directed by Broadway titan Alex Timbers, Moulin Rouge! is a lavish, spare-no-expense spectacle that plays through Dec. 17.

The rags-to-riches story of the Comedian Harmonists gets a fresh take with a sensational Broadway cast led by Sierra Boggess and Julie Benko. The jukebox musical is based on the Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman songbook. (Through Nov. 27 at the St. James Theatre).

The Gershwins’ “Sweet Charity”

The rags-to-royalty Cinderella story gets a new twist in this headstrong and grungy version of the tale by Emerald Fennell. It has played productions Off-Broadway and in Boston.

Gwen Verdon was a triple-threat Broadway star before she began playing Charity, the hard-luck dance hall hostess in this Bob Fosse-directed musical based on Fellini’s Nights of Cabiria. She is well cast alongside Kyle Blair as the buttoned-up claustrophobe she meets in a stalled elevator.

“The Threepenny Opera”

Threepenny Opera is one of the most challenging musicals ever to take the stage. Its biting satire and Kurt Weill’s jazzy music make it almost impossible for theatergoers to ignore its dark undercurrents of hypocrisy and corruption.

When Polly Peachum elopes with debonair crime lord Macheath (Mack the Knife), her parents unleash a dizzying manhunt. Blackmail and bribery collide with moments of shock patriotism.

“Roxie Hart: The Musical”

Angelica Ross, a screen star and human rights advocate, made Broadway history as the first openly transgender actress to play Roxie Hart. She replaces Amy Spanger in the Tony Award winning musical.

The Pose and American Horror Story actress is playing an eight-week engagement until June 4. The production features seasoned veterans Wright as the delusional flapper who seduces the media and public with her sensational murder trial, and Logan Floyd as her rival vaudevillian Velma Kelly.

“The Wizard of Oz”

The classic 1939 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film about Dorothy and her friends has become a symbol of women’s liberation. But it’s also a story about American society.

At first, the Wizard (Frank Morgan) won’t welcome them in — until they spruce up: a new wig for Dorothy and her friends, medals of courage for the Scarecrow and Tin Woodman and fresh straw stuffing for the Lion.

“Ain’t Misbehavin’”

Winner of the 1978 Tony Award for Best Musical, this sizzling celebration of jazz legend Thomas “Fats” Waller evokes the delightful humor and infectious energy that made him an international star. Five dynamic performers present an evening of songs that encapsulate the moods of this exuberant, joyful time in Black history.

Front Porch Arts Collective co-founder Maurice Parent directs. Ain’t Misbehavin’ runs through May 29 at Central Square Theater.

“Hello Dolly!”

The 1964 musical was an instant hit starring Carol Channing. It is based on Thornton Wilder’s 1938 farce The Merchant of Yonkers, which was revised and retitled The Matchmaker in 1955.

Jerry Herman’s energetic score and iconic songs include “Before the Parade Passes By,” “It Only Takes a Moment” and “Put on Your Sunday Clothes.” Pearl Bailey performed the role of Dolly Levi until the original Broadway run closed in 1970.

“The Book of Mormon”

The rollicking Broadway comedy satire of mismatched Mormon missionaries on their way to Uganda has been entertaining audiences and critics since 2011. The Book of Mormon features music and lyrics by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone and music by Robert Lopez, whose work includes Avenue Q.

The show is directed by Tony nominee Casey Nicholaw and stars Andrew Rannells and Josh Gad, both of whom received Tony nominations for their work.

“Rent”

Broadway’s “most sensational new musical” (Time Out New York) catapults a young woman to fame, excess, and intoxicating power in Club Millennium, where the beat goes on. “A theatrical experience like no other” (Variety). Featuring music by Talking Heads frontman David Byrne and DJ Fatboy Slim. Presented at the Neil Simon Theatre. Running time: 2 hours and 45 minutes. Tickets available now.

“Dear Evan Hansen”

The 2023 Tony winner centers on a high-school outsider with social anxiety. His therapist recommends that he write letters to himself about why each day will be good. But his letters fall into the hands of a bully, Connor.

Platt made his Broadway debut in the role, and has won critical raves for his vocal range and physically taxing open-wound performance. The show’s creators based it in part on their own experiences with grief.

“Hamilton”

This sung-through musical combines hip-hop, rap, R&B and traditional show tunes in a story about the Founding Father’s life. Its racially diverse cast has made it a global phenomenon.

Hamilton tells the story of America then, as told by Americans now. It features a dazzling cast led by Daveed Diggs, Leslie Odom Jr. and Jonathan Groff. Other roles include George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr.

The Final Girls of P Diddy Music Show

The girls re-entered the building and got ready to dance, sing, and laugh their way through a photo shoot. Diddy then gave them a series of tasks, including buying cheesecake.

The guys re-entered the building to meet with Ankah and are put into two groups. They then meet with Diddy to get the cut.

What is the show about?

In this episode the girls work on their vocals and meet with record producer Scott Storch. Dawn is not feeling her voice and has a hard time singing the high notes, but with encouragement from the others and Pooh Bear she sounds better by the end of the episode.

After three months the girls return to the studio and do more dance training, a photo shoot, and a radio interview. Diddy is impressed with the progress that the girls have made and chooses them to form a new group. He keeps Babs and Ness because he believes they are hip hop’s next Bonnie and Clyde. He also keeps Aundrea, who worries that she is not ready for the music business. However, he sends Carlos home.

Who are the judges?

The judges of the show include Diddy, DJ Khaled, Meghan Trainor, and record label executive Charlie Walk. The six-episode event series skips the traditional audition rounds and premieres Jan. 4 on Fox. The last singer standing earns the guidance and support of the judges in their quest to become a star.

The series got off to a bumpy start when music executive Charlie Walk was fired prior to the season one finale due to sexual misconduct allegations. However, Fox decided to stick with the original judging panel for season two.

According to TMZ, Fox is planning to fill out the remaining spots on the judging panel with a major artist and another executive within the music industry. The site also reports that a former Sony and Republic Records president could be joining the panel.

Who are the contestants?

In addition to Diddy, music producer DJ Khaled, singer-songwriter Meghan Trainor and record label executive Charlie Walk serve as judges on the show. The panel offers the contestants guidance in their pursuit of stardom.

The series skips the traditional audition rounds and begins with four finalists who must defend their spots week after week against challengers out to dethrone them. The last singer standing will win a once-in-a-lifetime chance to bring their musical career to the next level with the help of the show’s panel of industry heavyweights.

Contestant Jordan Battiste, a member of the band The Kings, says the experience has been amazing so far. However, it’s come with its share of stressors, including long photo shoots and invasive paparazzi. Ultimately, the decision to participate on the show came down to one thing for Battiste: his dream of making it as a solo artist.

What is the format of the show?

The girls go into the studio to record their songs. Dawn isn’t good at first but with help from Pooh Bear and the other girls, she manages to sound better. Aubrey is upset because her part of one of the songs was cut.

Diddy then asks the girls to perform individually vocally. Carlos and Julius don’t do well. Diddy keeps both of them in the show and tells them to practice more.

The guys meet with Ankah to rehearse their songs for the live performance. They perform and the audience votes for their favorite group. Robert, Dyshon, Willie, Qwanell, and Donnie all make it in the band. Jeremic and Devin are eliminated. The remaining contestants are Aundrea, Aubrey, and Dawn. The girls are now known as Da Band.

Will the show be cancelled?

After a long season of dancing, singing and laughs the four remaining members are back for a second round. And they are ready to do what it takes to be crowned the winners.

Diddy is back to pick up the guys where season one left off, and he doesn’t make it easy on them. They are challenged with a series of tasks including walking from Manhattan to Brooklyn to buy cheesecake. They also face tough dance performances and a photo shoot.

The guys get off to a rough start when Robert loses rehearsal time after spending an hour mending his relationship over the phone. Then Julius gets injured during his performance. But they pull through and all are in the final 10. Ankh Ra then splits the group into two.

Musical Shows in NYC: Broadway’s BestMusical Shows in NYC: Broadway’s Best

Top 5 Musical Shows in NYC in 2019

No visit to NYC is complete without a trip to Broadway. See bold new musicals, long-running hits and fascinating dramas.

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s rap-singing, Founding Fathers-playing show has shaken up both theater and history.

South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone don’t pull any punches in this obscenely funny, strangely heartwarming musical.

The Lion King

The Lion King is one of the most popular Broadway shows and has captivated audiences around the world. It is a must-see for any theater lover, and it will be an experience that you will remember for the rest of your life. If you want to save money on your tickets, buy them online and as far in advance as possible. This will avoid long lines at the box office and ensure that you get seats with better visibility.

The musical tells the story of a young lion cub who must defeat his evil uncle to claim his rightful place as king of the Pride Lands. The show has won dozens of awards, including six Tony Awards in 1998, for best musical and Julie Taymor’s innovative concept of using wildlife puppetry to bring the animals to life on stage. It is the third longest-running Broadway musical. Its soundtrack includes classics like “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” and “Hakuna Matata”. The Lion King is presented eight times a week at the Minskoff Theatre.

The Wizard of Oz

The Wizard of Oz is a fun, high-energy musical that is all about love, family and diversity. It features all the original songs and a few new ones. The stage production follows the script of the film scrupulously, but adds more zingers, physical comedy and displays of love. The joy of the performers translates offstage and into the audience.

The story follows Dorothy Gale, who is swept away from her Kansas farm by a tornado and into the Land of Oz. In her journey, she meets a Scarecrow, a Tin Man and a Cowardly Lion who are in search of brains, hearts and courage, respectively. The show also includes good and bad witches, talking animals, and a variety of other whimsical characters.

The Wizard of Oz appeals to every age group, from young children spellbound on their first viewing to octogenarians wistfully singing along with the songs. Livi Rose does a superb job of portraying Dorothy, with her lovely voice and charming personality.

Aladdin

Despite the fact that it’s been nearly a quarter century since Disney’s animated classic first charmed audiences, Aladdin feels as fresh as ever. This live-action remake of the story about a street rat who frees a magic lamp’s genie, and his subsequent escapades across Agrabah, is replete with colorful costumes, dazzling sets and familiar tunes. The film also features an impressive cast, although it’s a shame that the film’s new genie doesn’t match up to the charisma of Robin Williams’ original.

The largely brown-skinned cast avoids the ethnic stereotyping that marred the 1992 animated original, with Egyptian-Canadian Mena Massoud bringing a suitably roguish charm to the title role, and Naomi Scott delivering a fiery and cloistered Princess Jasmine. Meanwhile, Marwan Kenzari makes for a convincing evil Jafar and SNL alum Nasim Pedrad is funny as his sidekick Dalia. The songs by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, including “Friend Like Me” and “A Whole New World,” hold up well.

Moulin Rouge

The Broadway adaptation of Moulin Rouge is a theatrical celebration of truth, beauty, freedom and love. The show opened in 2019 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre and features a book by Tony Award winning playwright John Logan (Red, Peter and Alice) and music by Emmy award winning composer/songwriters David Yazbek and Sonya Tayeh. The cast includes Tony Award winner Derek Klena and JoJo, and the production is directed by Alex Timbers, who helmed a string of high-profile shows including Rocky and Beetlejuice.

The musical combines the melodrama of 19th century opera, the Technicolor brashness of a Hollywood musical and the quick-cutting frenzy of a modern music video. The result is a dazzling and over the top spectacle that defies comparison. The lavish set designs by Derek McLane and Catherine Zuber, are a feast for the eyes. But, there’s a strange shapelessness beneath all the eye candy that makes the show feel less like a bold theatrical experiment than a trip through the Kingdom of Pandering.
